Gone, Daddy, Gone

07 Nov

I have just been banned off AW.

Which does not come as a surprise, since I e-mailed Mac and said “Can you ban my butt of AW for November, please?” and she was kind enough to oblige.

It not only provides perspective, a good thing, but it also provides me with more writing and reading time. Without AW, I tend to gravitate toward the internet less — or am able to spend less time doing things, since I can say no to checking blogs. I usually just keep my e-mail open. This means I’m more likely to read a book when I’m avoiding writing. I see no downside.

I’m also more likely not to avoid writing. The last time I was banned to go write, I got a massive amount of work done.

And this time around, I’m a lot more excited about The Nondescript. So I expect to get way, way, way more.

Kristine is also banned, or about to be, since I double-dog dared her to ban herself for November too. It’s cool. It’s fun.

So now you know.

I am a leaf on the– no, wait, I said that already.

My days of underestimating you have definitely come to a middle. 😀 I feel free, like a toddler with no diaper.

    Fear me and tremble!

    No?

Be slightly discomforted by me and feel uneasy?

    Yes?

    Dunno.

I work in an industry that’s enough to get constantly distracted that by the time I get home I only want AW as a rest between hours.

I don’t think it’s a problem for most people. But it’s a growing problem for me. So I take steps. 🙂

I never expect anyone else to do the same – and those who have the self discipline already are ahead of the curve. I’ll still blog, and keep reading all of our blogs, but I find it all too easy to sit and stare at AW as if it were TV and I were a basement-dwelling mouth-breather.

She’s exactly right. I do the same thing.

And I’ll be around the blogs. I can walk away from those easily in the afternoon, when I settle down to write. So I’ll be posting here and commenting elsewhere. Thank goodness you won’t be without my charming dissertations. 😉

    Well, good lord.

Do what you gotta do, of course, and dropkcik your respective Muses in the butt.

I will not be self-banning. Quite frankly, I’ll need the distraction of AW on my (few) moments of freedom online. But I can completely respect those who do. Happy writing!

I do the same thing with AW. It’s downright addictive. But lately I’ve been hanging out here anyway, so…I don’t quite know the point of this comment.

CarrPeeDiem is becoming as addictive as AW?

Hey, I’d be all right with that. 😉

    weinies.

How can a mod be banned? Don’t you have responsibilities? Don’t you feel the guilt? Remember this: if AW goes to hell in a handbasket during your self-banishment it’s all on your head!

Pfft. I’ll just blog my guilt or something. 😛

With all this competition stuff, and the witty folk here, I really enjoy spending time here.

(I know, I know. His head’s gonna swell to the size of a watermelon, I can hear you lot thinking from over here.)

That’s okay, if you cut holes in the watermelon and pour Vodka in there, it’s pretty tasty.

No ego swelling. Just happy to be doing something useful. That’s good enough for me. It is, for that matter, why I post so much on the blog to begin with. 😀

Okay? Is that good enough? Please don’t cut holes in my head. There’s a hole on the front you can pour Vodka into.

That’s good enough. I’m out of Vodka anyway.

I has the vodka and the knife. 😦 You all left me. I’m gonna go eat worms. Or maybe chocolate.

  17. Pete Tzinski

    November 7, 2007 at 3:32 pm

??? Worms? Is that some sort of weird self-loathing thing? Or what?

’cause if you are, I’ll take the chocolate cake.

How come nobody ever makes me carrot cake? Or pineapple upside down cake? I would be happier if someone did. But now, all I can say is that my life is pretty plain.

    Hmmm…Chocolate covered worms.

Everyone here at work is trying to get their hands on a Wii and they are all sold out. LOL. It took a while to catch, but it seems that slow burn now has flames.

Now I have lyrics about puddles, rain, tea for two, and speaking my point of view stuck in my head, Pete. I hope you are happy.

P.S. If you come visit me in Indiana, I’ll bake you stuff. I love baking. Or I could come to your place and make a mess there. It’s up to you.

It was always selling pretty well, it was just overshadowed by all the noise that XBox and PS3 were making. It took my wife and I ages to find ours, and that was months and months ago.

We have it one, by the way. It does a number of important things in our household such as: Occupy the other end of the shelf from the DVD player; Gather dust; glow blue, hauntingly in the nighttime when Nintendo sends an update at 3AM and it wants to let us know.

Once we got over our long running addiction to Wii Sports, we discovered there wasn’t much else to do on there. And once you get over the next up thing, the enjoyment of the mini-game area (such as Rayman Rabbids), then it’s really at a loss. Games like Red Steel and Sonic sorely disappointed me.

However, there’s a Star Wars game (The Force Unleashed) coming out on it in time, and it promises real accurate lightsaber dueling. So of course, that’ll justify the whole purchase of the Wii. 😀

If a mess is made in order to fuel me with pineapple upside down cake, or carrot cake (I’m nuts for pineapple upside down cake at the moment), then you can destroy my whole entire kitchen. No sacrifice is too great!

Maybe I’ll try to make one for Thanksgiving.

I’ve been whistling “No Rain,” all day, so I thought someone else should share it with me. 🙂

Soccer Mom ! We didn’t leave, we just settled down on the bloggiesphere. You’re part of us, Missy. You’re just one of those who has better self control 😀 Me, I can’t even purchase those little fruity gel gummy candy things – yanno the ones, made with “real fruit” – if I buy a box of those pouches, I literally sit my ass down and eat Every. Single. One.

Same with rice krispie treats. I’ll eat the whole friggin’ box.

Since asking to get banninated, I’ve written WORDS. Plural. I’m so pleased.

  23. Pete Tzinski

    November 7, 2007 at 3:48 pm

Ohmygod those fruit things are so good. We don’t buy them either.

Kristine, you’re listening to an awful lot of my suggestions of late. This could end badly.

(Because you just KNOW one day I’m going to go “You know how cool it would be to make a parachute out of a blanket and jump off a cliff????”)

    Oh I’m a-feared, believe me.

“I dare you to ask for bannination”

“I sent my paragraphs in immediately”

    “Here, taste this.”

I’d be interested in a Wii, but I have no time for it now. I don’t even have time for me. Maybe as Writer’s Toddler gets a little bigger, we can do it together or something.

Pete, try Dance Dance Revolution: Hottest Party (with big old dance pad, special for the Wii), or Guitar Hero (comes with guitar you stick the Wii remote in).

DDR in particular has made me respect my Wii much. It’s my exercise machine.

Also, the Wii zapper extension is coming out with games.

Also, Twilight Princess was a pretty damn good Wii game. With a nice fishing game in it. Heh. (Bought it just for the fishing game, and also because the world is quite large and explorable…)

Also, at some point next year Deep Blue or whatever it is supposed to come out, and it’s a coral reef exploration game.

I think fishing master is here.

Oh, and there is a better golf game coming out next year that’s not Tiger Woods whatever.

I visit The Wiire for my Wii news. 😀

I cannot wait for the Coral reef game. If I hadn’t been a writer, I would have been a deep sea biologist.

Twilight Princess DID have a great fishing system. I dunno, the rest of it just didn’t do much for me. The horse mechanics were awesome.

DDR…no. I have the rhythm of a very white man (which, coincidentally, I am). And my wife would laugh at me. And I have a very nice electric guitar, if I feel like being a guitar hero. 😉

Now I have to go look at Deep Blue stuff and think happy thoughts.

I’m happy I have my Wii, no doubt about it. I really am glad we bought it. I just wish I had more to do on it.

Ahem. If you were Wiired better, you’d know that the game is called “FOREVER BLUE” and not Deep Blue.

    Duh!

    (I didn’t know either)

    (drooooooools)

Yeah, I never understood the renaming stuff. I guess it’s up to the international market heads.

I suck at DDR, but the easy settings are alright (and always on beginner mode for me). One day I’ll work up to “Basic”. 😀

    Um.

Why did you ban yourselves? So you’d talk less and write more?

    How’s that working for you?

*snort* I’m going to go make a pineapple upside down cake and watch TIVO. I have two hours of Dr. Who to watch. I don’t speak Wii.

Maybe I’ll add cookies for the winner. Oh yes. I will be mailing things out to the winner. I’ll make a couple dozen of your favorite cookies. In fact, I’ll make cookies for the high words winner and consolation cookies for the fewest words.

All I can say is that my life is pretty strange. You don’t like my point of view…gah! Now I have the sudden urge to wear my bumble bee costume.

    Not that I have one.

I talk just fine. It’s staring that’s the problem. I spend a few minutes here and there on here, and then I go off and do a few thousand words in between.

It’s working very well. I am rocketing ahead.

It’s working for me just fine – I can shoot off some comments here and go back to writing. Pop in the blogs, read one fast, leave some comments, go back to my writing.

With AW I could sit and stare for hours.

I’ll agree. I’ve been avoiding AW pretty well other than the occasional PM. I like being here.

I’m typing some new words tonight. Not many, but I took the time to fold together the parts of the WIP that were separated by POV into one coherent document. It was time, as it felt next to impossible now that both POVs are in the same location.

Well, I don’t want to start having an anti-AW conversation, ’cause no fun can come from that. But I will mention that, one of the things we have discussed time and again about the Tea Debacle is that it originated in the blogosphere, and we wanted to keep it there. I really, really like that it’s generated attention toward the blogs of the people competing. Not just mine, but people circulating to everyone’s blogs. That’s good. The conversations are interesting and pointed, it’s fun, and it doesn’t feel like the endless ocean that AW occasionally does.

(Which is hardly AW’s fault. Sooner or later, if enough people join, you wind up with the endless ocean effect. Fortunately, with the Tea Debacle, it’s got a people-cap on it. And it will continue to have one.)

No, no, that’s not what I meant. I love AW, it’s just that staring thing you mention. This does feel more intimate and connected. All I meant to convey was that I’ve done a pretty good job of staying through the power of my will. I haven’t posted in ages.

P.S. Last night was the first time in ages I’d popped off to OP. Your poor little guy is teething? Mostly what Piper wanted was to be held, so my arms got tired. Get some sort of sling or carrier so you guys can be close and you can still have hands.

I’m getting better at typing one handed certainly… 🙂

(I knew that’s what you meant about AW, don’t worry.)

I try not to post much in OP. I prefer to spend my time in the more writerly parts of the place.

I think I’m the only mod of Novels. It was with a small amount of guilt that I took off (not least because I still get the Report A Post notifications in my e-mail and have so far gotten two). But me and George Michael, we’ve got faith. 🙂
